What I wish I knew before baby’s arrival: a realistic guide to preparing for postpartum life 🐣

Understanding what to expect when you don’t really know what to expect is tough—and planning for it? Even tougher. I knew my life would change once my baby arrived, but I didn’t realise just how much I’d need to prepare for the aftermath of birth, not just the birth itself.

If you’re expecting, I want to share some down-to-earth advice based on my experience—what helped, what I wish I’d done sooner, and the little things that make a big difference in those early, beautiful, chaotic weeks.

1. Set Up a Simple, Comfortable Sleep Space šŸ›ļø

Your baby doesn’t need an elaborate nursery to sleep in. Whether it’s a fully decorated room or a simple crib next to your bed, keep it functional and cozy. A lot of mums recommend the ā€œNext to Meā€ bedside cots for easier night feeds and closeness. I didn’t have this for my little one but I want to give it a try with the next baby.

2. Stock Up on Diapering Essentials (But Not Too Much!) šŸ§·

Have a good stash of:

  • Diapers: I’d buy a couple from different brands to see what suits your baby best.
  • Wipes: same as with diapers. Just in case they have a reaction to any of them, and so you can change things quickly.
  • Nappy cream
  • A comfy changing mat or area where you don’t have to bend or strain your body. Having one upstairs and one downstairs is a lifesaver!

3. Have Formula On Standby šŸ¼

Even if you’re planning to breastfeed, having a box of formula ā€œjust in caseā€ can relieve so much pressure. Trust me—you might need it, and that’s okay. My milk was a little slower coming in so my husband had to run to the pharmacy to fetch some.

4. Get Bottles and a Steriliser Ready šŸ§¼

Whatever feeding route you take, it’s great to have bottles and a steriliser on hand. It will give you flexibility and peace of mind.

5. Don’t Overbuy Baby Clothes šŸ‘•

Buy a few newborn outfits and some in 0–3 months. Babies grow fast—and you’ll likely get gifted more than enough.
Tip: Wash clothes ahead of time and cut off all tags to avoid irritation, and wash them separate from yours at least during the first 6 months.

6. Bath Time Basics šŸ›

Stick to the essentials:

  • A baby bath or support
  • Gentle newborn shampoo and body wash
  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • A baby-friendly body lotion

Simple and skin-safe is best. I’d recommend to check bottles and ensure their safe for 0 months.

7. Build a Little Baby Care Kit šŸ§°

Create a small kit with:

  • Nail clippers
  • Saline spray
  • Cotton pads
  • A digital thermometer

Trust me, you’ll be glad it’s all in one place at 2am.

8. Prepare for You Too šŸ¤±

Don’t forget yourself! You’ll need:

  • Big maternity pads (yes, the ones you hoped you’d never wear)
  • Comfy underwear and clothes
  • Snacks, water, and breast pads
  • A little basket of self-care items

You matter too, mama. 🫶

9. Stock Up on Household Essentials šŸ›’

Before baby arrives, fill your kitchen and bathroom with:

  • Easy snacks and frozen meals
  • Basic groceries and toiletries
  • Household supplies

If you can freeze meals in advance—do it. You’ll be so grateful later when it’s 4pm and you just realised you only had a piece of toast all day.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for baby doesn’t need to be perfect. Focus on the things that will truly help you feel supported and ready. Give yourself grace, take it one day at a time, and remember—you’re already doing an amazing job.
