Understanding what to expect when you donāt really know what to expect is toughāand planning for it? Even tougher. I knew my life would change once my baby arrived, but I didnāt realise just how much Iād need to prepare for the aftermath of birth, not just the birth itself.
If you’re expecting, I want to share some down-to-earth advice based on my experienceāwhat helped, what I wish Iād done sooner, and the little things that make a big difference in those early, beautiful, chaotic weeks.
1. Set Up a Simple, Comfortable Sleep Space šļø
Your baby doesnāt need an elaborate nursery to sleep in. Whether itās a fully decorated room or a simple crib next to your bed, keep it functional and cozy. A lot of mums recommend the āNext to Meā bedside cots for easier night feeds and closeness. I didn’t have this for my little one but I want to give it a try with the next baby.
2. Stock Up on Diapering Essentials (But Not Too Much!) š§·
Have a good stash of:
- Diapers: I’d buy a couple from different brands to see what suits your baby best.
- Wipes: same as with diapers. Just in case they have a reaction to any of them, and so you can change things quickly.
- Nappy cream
- A comfy changing mat or area where you don’t have to bend or strain your body. Having one upstairs and one downstairs is a lifesaver!
3. Have Formula On Standby š¼
Even if you’re planning to breastfeed, having a box of formula ājust in caseā can relieve so much pressure. Trust meāyou might need it, and thatās okay. My milk was a little slower coming in so my husband had to run to the pharmacy to fetch some.
4. Get Bottles and a Steriliser Ready š§¼
Whatever feeding route you take, itās great to have bottles and a steriliser on hand. It will give you flexibility and peace of mind.
5. Donāt Overbuy Baby Clothes š
Buy a few newborn outfits and some in 0ā3 months. Babies grow fastāand youāll likely get gifted more than enough.
Tip: Wash clothes ahead of time and cut off all tags to avoid irritation, and wash them separate from yours at least during the first 6 months.
6. Bath Time Basics š
Stick to the essentials:
- A baby bath or support
- Gentle newborn shampoo and body wash
- Soft cloth or sponge
- A baby-friendly body lotion
Simple and skin-safe is best. I’d recommend to check bottles and ensure their safe for 0 months.
7. Build a Little Baby Care Kit š§°
Create a small kit with:
- Nail clippers
- Saline spray
- Cotton pads
- A digital thermometer
Trust me, you’ll be glad itās all in one place at 2am.
8. Prepare for You Too š¤±
Donāt forget yourself! Youāll need:
- Big maternity pads (yes, the ones you hoped you’d never wear)
- Comfy underwear and clothes
- Snacks, water, and breast pads
- A little basket of self-care items
You matter too, mama. š«¶
9. Stock Up on Household Essentials š
Before baby arrives, fill your kitchen and bathroom with:
- Easy snacks and frozen meals
- Basic groceries and toiletries
- Household supplies
If you can freeze meals in advanceādo it. Youāll be so grateful later when it’s 4pm and you just realised you only had a piece of toast all day.
Final Thoughts
Preparing for baby doesnāt need to be perfect. Focus on the things that will truly help you feel supported and ready. Give yourself grace, take it one day at a time, and rememberāyouāre already doing an amazing job.
